It is now one hour before the end of the working day. We may say this represents someone in their 70s or 80s, or even nearer to the end of life. The body is crumpling. What can we do for the Lord now? Why should we expect anything from him? Why does he bother with us? We have resisted him all life-long. We have perhaps heard the gospel many times, but we pushed it away, and yet he goes on calling us. We think of the thief on the cross. His eyes were opened in his dying moments, yet in that last hour he looked and believed, and this was all that was necessary to obtain eternal life. What could he do for the Lord? There was not even time for him to be baptized.
Are you afraid of God? Are you addicted to this life? Christ came out into this world to take us to be with him in heaven. He knew everyone who would ever believe in him. In fact, we only believe because he knew us from before the world began. You must repent and believe, trust him. How many times will God call you? How many times have you already felt his touch? Why will you die when God will be gracious to you?
