Wouldn’t you have thought the landowner would have lost patience with these men? He might have said, ‘They are wasters. They probably won’t work anyway, and by the time they are there, and shown what to do, there will only be half an hour left. No! He said to himself, ‘Their families need money, I must go out and do something for them. Consider the great advantage to them of being in the vineyard. Before they were hired, they were unemployed; now they can work, have access to nourishment for them and their families.’ The vineyard is like a picture of the kingdom of heaven. Before conversion, we are outsiders, penniless. Once we go in, we are servants of the Lord; we are living for the kingdom of heaven; we are loved by him and recipients of his grace. Some ask, what is conversion? How do you describe it? This is a good picture.
