Christ however, who is aware of all their plotting, is supremely calm about all this, because he knows that the will of God must come to pass. At the end of the day he goes back to Bethany to be with the family he loves, and practices his own teaching: ‘Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.’ Luke tells us that he came daily to the temple and taught the people. Right up to the end he continued to teach and no hour was wasted. But this increased the hatred of the chief priests, the scribes and the leaders of the people, and they sought with ever great desperation to plot his destruction. This had to be done cunningly and secretly because, Luke tells us, the people were attentive to hear him, and the leaders were well aware of this and dared not take him openly.
