The scribes and Pharisees said it is nothing to swear by the altar, and it is nothing to swear by the temple, but God sees things very differently. He holds us to an oath in a way that we may not expect.
Words matter. How carefully we need to think about every word we speak. Christ warns us of this in another passage: ‘I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment’ (Matthew 12:36). In reality, there is no such thing as an idle word, for though men treat them as idle, God does not. He looks behind our words and reveals their significance. We must have an understanding of the significance of all things in order to use words correctly. We ask God to pardon our many hasty words, spoken without proper consideration.
