‘Ye blind guides’ – yes, they were presumptuous enough to make themselves guides to the people, even though they knew what was in their own hearts. They were the most unsuitable guides imaginable.
The substitution of one act of obedience for another is the trick of the hypocrite, but this has a devastating effect on his faculty of discernment. He exaggerates his acts of external obedience, because these lie within easy reach since they require no real spiritual vitality to perform. He is also capable of developing a censorious spirit which finds fault with those who do not live up to his chosen narrow area of assessment. But along with this can go an amazing blindness towards his own spiritual failings. This is evidence of strong self-deception, which is able to turn us into people with staggering inconsistencies.
