Christ rips off the mask of hypocrisy with the violence that it deserves. There is nothing in the hypocrite that justifies his being treated gently, for he proceeds on the basis of deception from start to finish.
What aggravates the hypocrite more than to have his deceitfulness exposed? The great trouble he has taken to hide it, is justified by the honour he receives from the people. But if that honour is taken away and he is revealed instead to be worthy of shame, then his whole life’s project is in ruins. Therefore the hatred of the scribes and pharisees was stirred to the point that it exploded in murderous hatred towards Christ.
