The description of the Pharisees in this chapter is Christ’s exposition of hypocrisy. What he exposes of their character and behaviour, is all they would like to keep hidden.
Only those who are genuine can be teachers of God’s people. Modesty and humility are characteristic of a man of God, but he cannot completely conceal his acts of obedience to God, and seeing these the people have a mind to follow his example, and his teaching comes with greater power. He does not load burdens on the people but sets before them the pathway that leads to life. How gentle was Christ by contrast with the Pharisees, and how reasonable are his standards! His yoke is easy and his burden is light. He is conscious of what it costs each of his disciples to follow him, and he does not wish to make their discipleship painful but joyous.
