The lord sees through all his hypocrisy in attempting to blame his behaviour on anything else, and strips bear the real cause of his failure. The difference lay in this alone: that he was a wicked and lazy. He knew what he should have done, but to defend himself, he found fault with his master’s character. The lazy man creates obstacles in his way that are designed to convince himself and the world that he would move forward if he could, but he is prevented. In this case the obstacle was an imagined impossible task which his master had set him, and yet his task was smaller than the task which the other two servants succeeded in doing. He was lazy in not getting about his work; he was wicked in attempting to blame his master for his laziness.
Application
How many excuses men and women invent to justify their failure to seek the Lord in repentance and faith. Any excuse, however implausible, is likely to be embraced. All manner of intellectual difficulties are welcomed. Why are there wars, sicknesses, and tragedies? How can a God of love send people to hell? Why is much evil done in the name of religion? How can we believe in a God of the gaps? The Bible has answers for all these complaints, but as soon as one is given, the next is grabbed hold of. The truth is that man does not want to believe in God, but he pretends to be fair minded.
