The servant with ten talents – five entrusted to him, and five more which he had earned by trading – was allowed to keep his ten talents. Although he had returned all to his master, they were now treated as his.
The wicked servant proved himself unworthy of his master’s trust and although he received less than any other servant, he was not allowed to keep even the one talent that he had. All light and truth given to this world during the period of gospel day will be taken away once the night of eternal darkness comes. There will be no further opportunity to repent and believe the gospel, for God will no longer extend his gracious offer of mercy. The gospel will be withdrawn and God’s offer of mercy will cease. Christ will reveal himself to all unbelievers as their implacable enemy and they will have all good taken from them. All joy and happiness will be taken from the lost, for in their case it was only given temporarily. So many good things from the Lord are taken for granted by the wicked and hardly noticed. But when all these things are removed, they will see how much they had received and how greatly they have offended the Lord by their ingratitude and lack of appreciation. The unbeliever will lose life in this world and all tokens of the favour of God: the sun that shone by day and the rain that watered the earth. In hell there will be no sound of music, no voice of bridegroom and bride, no activity of craftsman or pleasure of creative activity. Even the gifts of common grace will be withdrawn, and all access to the favour of God will be lost. The wicked will be judged for all the ungodly words which ungodly sinners have spoken against the Lord and his messengers. But what is taken from the wicked will be given to the righteous, for the meek shall inherit the earth.
