The Saviour of the world taught the existence of hell. He approved of hell as a fit punishment for those who do not serve him and he himself will send men and women who have not believed in him into everlasting damnation. He who could have been their Saviour and loved them for ever; he could have been the one who so sympathised with them that he did more for them than any other human being has ever done for a friend, but they did not come in repentance, and so the same one will set himself eternally against them and inflict on them the most severe punishment conceivable. He will thrust them into outer darkness, shut out of the loving presence of God for ever. God will still be a God of love, but he will never be so to these. For them, his love will be forever out of reach and they will only know him as a God of law and justice. There, in hell, will be eternal torment and the weeping of regret and lost opportunity as well as the weeping of hopelessness. Such tears will never rouse Christ’s pity again for all that he would have done for the lost has already been rejected by them. God could not have made it any clearer what would be the consequences of this rejection, and yet they persisted. Therefore they will be preserved in hell forever in a state of eternal death, never ceasing to exist, but never ceasing to experience God’s anger. If the kindest one that ever lived gives us this warning, how can we fail to take it seriously?
