Christ will say, ‘You have proven yourselves to be those who love me, because when you saw me hungry, thirsty, without shelter, lacking clothing, sick, or falsely imprisoned, you came to my need and did what you could to help me.’The connection between this verse and the previous is fascinating.
All obedience is resolved into one issue – our love for Christ. Whether we love the Lord is demonstrated by what we have done for him. Could we be said to love someone who was in trouble and in need of our help but whom we ignored and left without assistance? Certainly not, for love will find a way of bringing help to those who it is in our power to help. It is bodily needs that Christ talks about for we all know how to clothe the naked and feed the hungry. The cost to ourselves is seldom very great for it usually means giving to others from our own abundance. Where this is not the case the gift is of even more value. But Christ does not ask us to give what we do not have but the rule is, ‘He who has two tunics, let him give to him who has none; and he who has food, let him do likewise.’ How can we deny a coat to the one who has given his life for us. If we understand anything of the personal cost of our salvation to our Saviour, we will hold nothing back from him.
