Those on Christ’s left have heard all his gracious words spoken to the righteous and seen the wonderful eternal future awaiting them, but they are acutely conscious that none of these blessings are for them, for their hearts condemn them before Christ. What will he say to them? Tragically, their sentence is fixed and there can be no further offer of mercy.
Those who have sided with the devil in this life and believed his doctrines will share his fate. They made a pact with him and they must discover how worthless that pact is and how powerless he is to deliver them. If the head is judged, his followers cannot expect anything different. To vote for the devil in this life is to be with him in the next.
The most terrifying aspect of hell is its everlasting nature. If men have at times sensed this while on earth, they will certainly experience it in hell. Man must have hope and yet hell will crush all hope. How will he face each moment when he knows that he must continue to experience the same pain forever without relief? Where will he find a moment’s rest or respite from this? The doors of hell will be shut tight by the unchanging word of the Lord to prevent escape.
Is this fire literal? How can it not consume entirely after a time? How can it go on burning for all eternity and not destroy its object? We cannot answer that question, for hell and heaven are both supernatural environments, kept in existence by God. Fire is understood by many to be a metaphor. Whatever it means, God’s punishment will affect the whole of man’s being. The resurrection of the wicked will take place before the final judgment and men will be cast body and soul into hell (Matthew 5:29,30; 18:9; Mark 9:25).
Is God too harsh? No, for our sin is infinitely great, having been committed against an infinitely holy God, and it is aggravated by persistence in the face of God’s kindest offers of mercy. Moreover Christ has warned us again and again that it will come to this if we do not repent. Even those who have not heard the gospel have been warned in their hearts that the wages of sin is death.
