How can men and women who must face Christ either at the end of their lives or at his coming at the end fail to anticipate what that hour will mean? We have had so many opportunities to consider the gospel, to read the word of God, to listen to preaching, and to plead with the Lord in secret to give us life. Yet we do not take this seriously until perhaps it is too late. What regrets! What self-recrimination we will experience! How we will condemn ourselves as fools! You may seek the Lord while the door is open, but the time is coming when it will be closed, and then nothing will persuade him to open it. He will come at the midnight of this world, when the unbeliever least expects him to come (1 Thessalonians 5:3). Many will be convinced he will never come again, and others will delude themselves that they are ready.
