Matthew 27:65

Pilate is not going to stand in the way of their plan. He does not want more trouble in his province. But at the same time he is contemptuous of the Jewish leaders who have threatened him in a deceitful way and twisted his arm to do something he did not want to do. They have a watch, a Roman watch – perhaps by some prearrangement with the Jewish authorities – and they have the permission they sought. Make it as sure as you can, says Pilate. The Jews could not therefore complain that it had not been made more sure.
Application
We do not know how the stone was sealed. It was already so large a stone that the women knew they could not move it on their own, but now it was sealed also. So here is the power of man to ensure the Lord stays dead, versus the power of God to raise him from the dead. Is there any contest? As the Charles Wesley writes: ‘Vain the stone, the watch, the seal; Christ has burst the gates of hell; death in vain forbids his rise; Christ has opened paradise.’
