Trust us, say the chief priests. We won’t let you down.
How often the unbelieving world asks us to put our trust in it. It asks us to believe that if will never let us down. What accounts for this great loyalty which it boasts towards us, when it is willing to deceive all around us? Are we that special? Of course we ought to recognise a lie when it has just come from one who has just asked us to lie for them. We owe no trust to the world. It claims it has the power to deliver us from the consequences of the wrongs we carry out at its bidding, by joining its side. Is the world willing to become surety for us? Is it willing to die for our sins? Is it prepared to love us with an undying love? Honour among thieves is a doubtful matter. When it comes to loyalty among unbelievers before the judgment seat of Christ, the adage is true: ‘Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life [to save his skin]’ (Job 2:4).
