The soldiers, though deeply uncomfortable, are persuaded. They take the money, a small consolation for their cooperation and they make the best of the situation.
The world manages to force us into its mould, though our corners are dented in the process. We have no choice; we must accept its terms, for we have no other friends, we believe. Seeing God as our enemy and knowing he is against us on account of sin, we are compelled to go further into evil and strengthen our alliances with the world in order to protect ourselves. What will happen if the world lets us down, we do not want to think about.
The church of God must bear with many lies brought against it. It often has no weapon to deal with these except to continue patiently walking in the truth, and let God deal with the lies of men. Those lies may well convince some, and they prefer to believe them than to accept the truth. Others will have their eyes opened, and discover that they must choose between the lies of the devil and the truth of God. The two have clashed with each other, and a choice is forced upon all of us. You cannot believe the message of this world without dismissing the truth of God as a lie. You cannot believe the truth of God without seeing through the deceptions of this world. The Christian waits for the true light to come when all will be unveiled, but he walks as one who belongs to the day, even though the darkness still persists for a time.
