Matthew tells us that angels then ministered to the Lord Jesus and promise of Psalm 91 was kept, in spite of Satan’s attempt to twist it. The temptation of Christ unmasks the devil, and exposes his cunning, his strategy, and his malice.
When all had ended it was done according to God’s plan, and the devil departed for a season. ‘Resist the devil, and he will flee from you’, says James (James 4:7). He will flee for the time being, but he will be back, and we must keep up our guard. Satan also returned to tempt Christ (Matthew 16:23), and particularly to assault him on the cross (John 14:30).
Christ did not contemplate for a moment yielding to the temptation, and nor should we. Do not delay in rejecting it; do not think about it or savour it. Cast it aside in disgust. Keep the mind clean. Just as Christ did not allow any wedge to be inserted into his mind, nor should we. Let us beware of a secret life which involves doing what other Christians would not approve. If we allow ourselves to do the things that Christ does not approve of, then the Spirit withdraws. Live for his message, his service. What is the secret of power and success in the Christian life? Prayer, yes, but also successfully resisting temptation, so that the devil withdraws and God blesses us.
