Matthew 4:2
Comments
Christ was tempted by the devil for forty days and nights. In Matthew and Mark you could get the impression that the temptation started at end of the forty days, but Luke gives more information. The temptation started at the first day and what we read about is, it seems, the climax. He was as exhausted as he could be. He must live a perfect life in all circumstances, including bodily weakness. It must be seen that even under extreme weakness and under assault, he does not sin. It is the divine will of Father, Son, and Spirit. It is often observed that because Christ was perfect, he could know no temptation arising from within, so he is assaulted from without.
Application
Temptation came to Christ, and can equally come to us, in all circumstances. He is on a spiritual high and yet there is temptation. You can be at your happiest in the Lord, fresh from prayer, lifted up and having seen great things, and yet you can still be susceptible to terrible temptation.
