In deliberate fulfilment of the prophecy of Isaiah already quoted by Matthew, the Lord Jesus went throughout Galilee, that region which before his coming to them was in darkness spiritually. If they had eyes to see, they saw the light, because they heard the glorious words that came from his mouth.
We are to imitate our Lord in having the same zeal for souls and strive with all our power to reach as many as we can with the gospel. This is the imperative that must drive every preacher and evangelist.
What is the kingdom of heaven? It is the kingdom over which Christ reigns. In its present form, before Christ returns to judge the world and to make new all things, that kingdom cannot be seen visibly. The Lord corrects the mistaken idea of the Pharisees who demand to know when the kingdom of God should come, and says, ‘The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you’ (Luke 17:20-21). For now the kingdom exists in the hearts of men and women who have submitted to the rule of Christ over their lives. But ultimately what is now invisible will be made visible and all things that are now secret will be published from the roof tops. The licence which God has given to evil for a time will come to an end, and the indisputable reign of Christ will come (Revelation 12:10).
