Christ will one day cast the devil and his angels into the everlasting fire prepared for them (Matthew 24:41), but the time has not yet come, and he simply answers with a word. He could have answered Satan with new words, words of his own, not taken from Scripture, but that would have defeated the devil with a weapon not available to us.
Christ gives us the perfect example. God’s way is best: spiritual food comes first. It must be his way, not mine. We will not have to face the full force of the devil as Christ did, for our heavenly Father protects us and limits the power of the temptation according to our strength, and will not allow us to be tempted above what we are able to bear. But we will need to use the weapons God has provided for us, and the battle cannot be avoided in this life. In all life’s arrangements, whatever decision, whatever task is before us, let us make sure our first priority is obedience to God and the advance of his kingdom.
Some think that the fact Christ was tempted made him less divine. But he had to limit himself so as to experience all that was part of human nature. His temptation was genuine; he made himself truly vulnerable. If he had fallen, every human soul would be in the power of Satan and God would be utterly frustrated.
