The devil then took Christ to Jerusalem and stood him on the pinnacle of the temple. Did this literally take place or was it a vision? This has been debated for centuries.
The temptation is to avoid suffering, to take a shortcut to fame. We too are tempted to take shortcuts, to consider ourselves first. We too are tempted to presumption. Christ tells every disciple, ‘If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me’ (Matthew 16:24). We cannot follow the Lord if we are not prepared to walk the path which he trod. Christ was tempted to presume on the Father’s care, but the motivation for doing so would have been to avoid the cross. We are perhaps tempted to misuse the doctrines of grace, to sin on the assumption that God has called us and we cannot be lost. We may be tempted to presume upon God mercy and to sin that grace may abound (Romans 6:1). Sin tonight, and put it right tomorrow. Sometimes we are drawn to the very edge of capitulation.
There are other lessons we might learn. It was a high place. We find ourselves in many high places, places which are very happy, optimistic. We may give up watching. Places that are high may be dangerous: parenthood – you spoil your children; office in the church – you may ruin many others; ministerial or ambassadorial position – you may lead the whole church astray.
