Christ responds with Scripture. His answer comes from Deuteronomy 6:16: ‘Thou shalt not tempt the Lord’, where Moses referred back to the incident at Massah (‘temptation’) and Meribah (‘strife’).
Do you tempt God? ‘I expect God to bless me whatever I do. My sins are forgiven, but I do not want to worship him, serve him, give up things in my life which I know he does not like.’ Do you argue in your defence before God, and say, ‘You would be breaking your promise if you did not see me through to eternity; let me do it my way’? God’s promises are not given to us to produce presumption in us, but to produce genuine trust. Presumption turns the promise into an instrument of sin.
