Now comes the third temptation according to Matthew’s order. Satan takes Christ up to an exceedingly high mountain, and shows him all the kingdoms of the world in a split-second, ‘in a moment [point] of time’ (Luke 4:5).
Satan craves worship. He longs for the praise and recognition of created beings. He wants to usurp the place of God and steal the glory due to him. Isaiah speaks of his pride: ‘For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High’ (Isaiah 14:13-14). If this was Satan strongest desire when he confronted Christ, it must still be his desire today, and he continues to induce men, to the best of his ability, to worship him. The Antichrist will seek the same worship.
If only we will apostatise, what Satan will offer us! Actually he will not tempt us in one bound. Rather, at first it will be, ‘You can have this if you are prepared to compromise.’ Little by little he will move us further from the right path.
The devil could not tempt us in the way he tempted Christ. We could not take in the scope of this temptation that was presented to the mind of Christ. We are simple, so our temptations are basic.
