(Synoptics: Matthew 5:20-26) Christ now expounds the law for his disciples and sets the standards they are to live by. He does this by taking six examples which show how the Pharisees had limited notions of righteousness to some crudely literal view, and he makes clear that he requires a far higher standard of conduct from his disciples.
When did this wrong interpretation start? After Babylon, when, during the long period of 400 years, the Jewish leaders accumulated their oral traditions around the law. So we should not think that ‘old time’ goes back to Moses. It was the time of the development of the oral law, which effectively obscured the true commandments of God from the people.
