Clearly the Lord would not lead us into temptation. The real petition here is ‘Lord lead us’, for if he leads us nothing can go wrong.
This confidence in God is to his honour and glory as well as to our practical help. God wills that we are exposed to our enemy the devil to drive us to take refuge in him. This is our opportunity to trust God and to be able to put up resolute opposition to evil. By doing so our faith grows. This petition is not just for ourselves but for all believers, especially those in our local church, with whom we should sympathise not only in their material and circumstantial difficulties, but also in their spiritual battles with the devil.
We rejoice in his overwhelming power and rule because we have supreme confidence in his mercy, wisdom, power, goodness, and justice to rule over us forever. All dignity, all supremacy, all that has any value, power, or beauty comes from God. It is only lent to those who abuse him; one day he will take it all back. Only in heaven with him can all this abide forever. Where will you be then? May we be among all those who say, ‘Our Father in heaven’, and who long for the kingdom of God to replace the kingdom of this world.
