(Synoptics: Matthew 6:22-23) These such wonderful and original illustrations, and are characteristic of the teaching of our Lord Jesus Christ, who loved to teach using pictures. Although the eye is singular it is not referring to one eye, but to your vision as a whole; it is just done in a very eloquent and yet simple way.
There is only one reality and the light reveals it. The blind man may pretend to himself that the world is other than it is, but if his imagination conflicts with reality he will stumble and bruises himself as he encounters unexpected objects. There are not multiple ways to God but only one. Our opinion counts for nothing and man-made religions do not help. The Moslem, the Hindu, the Buddhist all claim to have the truth. Are they all equally right, and are their claims all equally valid? Must we never say that one is right and another wrong, and is certainty about the life and the hereafter not possible? The light reveals what is really there, and what is there is not many different worlds, but one. The sighted person may lead the blind, but the blind cannot lead the sighted. God’s light allows us to see the landscape clearly, so that a traveller can set his sight on a distant object and choose a path that leads in the right direction. How limited are the blind by comparison! They cannot look ahead where they are going; they cannot look behind where they have come from; they cannot choose a better way.
What does this illustration have to do with where our treasure is? What is it that makes one person count earthly things the most valuable, while another counts heaven as incomparably greater? It is that enlightened understanding that the believer possesses, an understanding which regulates his entire walk and conduct through this world. It warns him of things that are unprofitable or worthless, and teaches him not to waste his time with them. It shows him where there are hidden dangers and causes him to avoid them. He evaluates material things and quickly concludes that in comparison to eternal things they are not worth striving for. He sees all the snares and traps that are associated with the love of riches and he trusts God to provide sufficient for all his needs.
Are you living as a Christian or as a worldling? Are you constantly thinking about the home, the furnishings, the car, the children’s schooling? You must give some thought to these things, but is it never enough? Does it leave no room for what should be your highest concerns – for the kingdom of heaven? Does your home need to be better than anybody else’s? Are you going to send our children to the very best school in the whole world, no matter what it costs? Well, then your eye has become confused, and your spiritual direction is wrong, and your devotion and dedication to Christ has gone.
