Our translators have assumed that this is about our height and that is one possible way the verse can be translated. ‘Which of you by taking thought’ – by consuming care and deep anxiety – ‘can add’ eighteen or fifteen inches, whatever a cubit was, to his height? That is actually quite a lot to add to your height.
What attitude are we actually being exhorted to have about our own lives? A very trusting attitude, one that does not ascribe too much power to ourselves. We must still exercise the God given means to provide for ourselves, but having done so we can be completely relaxed about the outcome because we know that ultimately all that we have is from the Lord. This balance between action and trust is hard to achieve, but it is the secret of how the Lord wishes us to live. The Christian life can be a life entirely free from anxiety. We can arrive at that state of peace where we have done what we are able to do and although we can find fault with what we have done, and although we are aware that a more able person might have done more, we leave all the circumstances with the Lord. He knows what we are and he made our capacities.. If we have honestly and humbly used the capacities we have received from him, we have done enough.
