(Synoptics: Matthew 7:12) This verse, the so called ‘golden rule’, stands on its own as a description of how the disciple of Christ should live. But the word ‘therefore’ also looks back at what has gone before, making this a summary of all that he has taught in the sermon.
There is a promise to answer prayer is here. It assumes that the things you want others to do to you and that you should do to them are good: kindness, honesty, helpfulness, consideration, courtesy. Be careful how you live. Be the kindest and most considerate in the office, in the family. All of the ‘my rights’ thinking that is part of modern culture is at odds with the spirit of the Lord’s command here which says that first should come ‘other’s rights’.
