The hypocrite not only passes judgment on others, but he thinks he can correct their fault without giving attention to his own faults. The Lord uses a most intriguing picture to show the foolishness of this.
The solution is clear: forget about everyone else and focus entirely on your own faults. Come before the Lord and dismiss from your mind all comparisons with others. Remember that you will not be measured against other human beings, but against God’s unchanging law. The Lord sees us as we really are and sees through all the masks that we put on. Repent sincerely as if you are the only sinner in the world. When it comes to repentance and faith and being restored to a right relationship to the Lord, put yourself first. Follow the advice given to parents in the event of an incident on a plane: put your own oxygen mask on first before attending even to your children, because otherwise you will be unable to help them either.
Christ calls the man what he is. Unless we are prepared to receive such plain correction and to know ourselves, we can never be cured. The first step to recovery is to stop pretending that we are better than we are and to come into the light before God even though all our sin is exposed. It is not pleasant to admit that we have sunk so low and yet we must allow the shame of what we have done to settle on us, and truly hypocrisy is shameful. The hypocrite does not do what he does without knowing, and so there is lying involved and self-deception.
We want to evangelise people and win of the Christ but we better not be hypocrites. There is a constant duty of self-examination and repentance. This is a condition for answered prayer. We must be striving against sin, conscientious in advance.
