If a mere man had said this, it would have been arrogant – ‘I myself will come and heal him’ – but the Son of God never exaggerates or overstates his power. He never encourages us to believe anything which he will not do; he is always as good as his word. He gives us his word in order for us to rest fully on it. It calms our fears and gives us strength to face all trials with his help, for he knows all that will take place in our lives. But in this case something different was going to take place, and of course the Lord knew it. He could not do less than he said, for he cannot raise our hopes for nothing. The servant was going to be healed indeed, but Christ was going to heal him in a way that revealed even more clearly his divine power. However, first he needed to prepare the centurion’s mind for that, and so this word had to be spoken.
