(Synoptics: Matthew 9:27-31) One miracle created a longing for another. In more general terms, the blessing of God on one person makes others long for their own needs to be supplied.
Why do people follow Christianity? Some do so for inadequate reasons. Some find the Christian faith intellectually satisfying, and certainly there is nothing like it for answering the deep question about life. It provides a worldview which is consistent and which recognises the true state of affairs in this world. It identifies man’s need, and explains the origin of evil in a way that no other belief system does. Some come to the church for companionship. They find Christians to be faithful and honest in the way they relate unlike so many in the world. Some come for help with the trials of life and they mistakenly think that the Christian life is one which is free of trials. They may have been led to think this by deceptive preachers who have distorted the Christian message. Some come to be made rich, because they have believe an even more farfetched and shameful misrepresentation of the message known as the prosperity gospel, which teach that God rewards his people by making them rich in this world. That false message does tremendous harm. For all these reason people may seek to follow Christ but without truly becoming his disciples. They miss out that genuine repentance and trust in Calvary that always marks the beginning of true discipleship.
