‘What do ye imagine against the LORD? he will make an utter end.’ Do you doubt this, says the prophet? What's going on in your mind about what the Lord will do? Do you think he cannot do it, or he will not follow through on what he has said he will do, or he will forget to do it? Will he change his mind? No, says Nahum; he will do it.
Once we leave this world in a state of unbelief, there is no possibility that we will recover. God sets a limit on how long he will bear with those who reject him. When judgment comes, it will be overwhelming and crushing. God exalts nations and he brings them down according to his will, and he does not need to strike a second time, as if his first blow was less effective than he intended. He has taken into account all our defences, and mastered them all. What confidence can the enemies of God have as they come to do battle with him? Even Satan with all his intelligence, finds that every tactic he employs works against him.
