These words are spoken in irony. ‘Go and take all these measures to protect yourself,’ Nahum says, ‘but all your efforts will be in vain, because the Lord has decreed what will happen to you, and you cannot alter it.
How can sinful man defend himself against the judgment of God? How can he hide his guilt from God? How can he deny the wilfulness of what he has done, and deliberate nature of his disobedience? When the Lord has given him one opportunity after another to mend his ways, and instead he has gone back to the same sins again and again, how can he pretend he did not know the standard, or that God has no patience and is unreasonable in the way he deals with us? Death is the king of terrors, and it awaits all who will not come to Christ for forgiveness and new life. None can put it off for even a moment. None can raise themselves from the dead. None argue successfully with God and be their own advocates. Our only defence is to admit all that we have done, and cast ourselves upon his mercy.
