They clave to their brethren, their nobles, and entered into a curse and into an oath. Perhaps we would mention those things the other way round to grasp the significance – entered into an oath with a curse attached.
There was much in their religion which was against personal interest, if personal interest was measured by material gain and convenience. But of, God requires us to serve him even at the expense of our convenience, and when we do so willingly we discover that his service is our greatest possible gain.
We could say a great deal about that, because cultural conformity and compromise and adaptation is in fashion now among many Christians. If it is the culture of our nation, we must yield to it; that is the thinking. If the world wants to do that, we must do that in order to get their attention. But as of old, one of the conditions of the typical covenant of old times, which is also reflected in the covenant of grace, is no cultural compromise.
