Nehemiah 12:43

Again, reference is made back to the time of David and of Solomon and David’s inspired prescriptions for worship. It was in adherence to the ordinances of God and in the knowledge that they were being true to them that they rejoiced. Their obedience brought them joy. This is the opposite of a spirit which always wants to invent new forms of worship. The newfound citizens of Jerusalem were joyful because they were doing exactly what God had told them to do. They were not ashamed to submit fully to his order.
Application
We should not be concerned that we worship in the same way that God’s people worshipped five hundred years ago, a thousand years ago, or as they worshipped in the time of the early church. What needs to be added to worship that is not already a part of it? Yes, we may write hymns today that express a Biblical understanding of the work of Christ in the gospel, but we are not obsessed with continually inventing something new. We are content with hymns that were written hundreds of years ago, because the important elements of such hymns are things that do not change. The Scripture does not change and there is enough in Scripture to occupy us in study and in meditation all the days of our lives.
