There is the comment that when the people heard these things, they separated from Israel all the mixed multitude, presumably for the purposes of worship and entry into the house of God. Before the mixed multitude were cleared out on Nehemiah’s return, ‘Eliashib the priest’ – indeed, he high priest (Nehemiah 3:1, 20) – ‘having the oversight of the chamber of the house of our God’ – he seems to have had absolute control over it – ‘was allied unto Tobiah’, a principal enemy.
