Comments
There is quite a meeting held here – ‘Be not ye afraid of them. Remember the Lord, which is great and terrible, and fight for your brethren, your sons, your daughters, your wives and your houses.’ To fight against men is one thing; to fight against God is another. The enemies of the Jews had set themselves against Almighty God. How could they prevail? How could they do anything to hurt his cause, or deliver a setback of any sort? Time and time again we see in Scripture that those who try to hurt the cause of the Lord only end up propelling it forward. God turns their efforts against them in a way that deeply frustrates them. At the same time he knows what his enemies intend, and it is a fearful thing to fall into his hands for he will be a consuming fire to all who oppose him. With a small gesture he set aside their malicious schemes, but they have marked themselves as those who are opposed to him and he will not forget.
Application
This is motivation for us too. What are we watching for? What are we looking out for? Who are we protecting? Our own spiritual family, our own brothers and sisters in the Lord, our own relations after the flesh. We are looking for their spiritual welfare. We must defend the faith. We must pick up all the attacks upon it.
