Nehemiah 6:12

But then the real explanation: ‘And lo, I perceived that God had not sent him.’ How do you think Nehemiah perceived that God had not sent him? Because this supposed prophet from God was telling him to do something against God's law, to take refuge in the holy of holies, where only the high priest may go, once a year, and that not without the shedding of blood and sacrifice. So this cannot be a genuine prophet, and a genuine message from God. Also he had been given a commission from God with a promise of safety while he was pursuing God's commission. God would be contradicting himself if he sent a prophet to tell him to go and hide in the holy of holies. What will be the result? The result of my hiding in the holy of holies is that word will get out – because these enemies will make sure it does – and I will be utterly discredited, and everyone will be dismayed, and the workers in Jerusalem will be completely bemused that their God-sent leader has smashed through God's law.
Application
But there is a principle for us today. People say it would be godly and proper and legitimate to do such and such a thing in your church life, in your worship, in your evangelism. ‘Why don't we do this? This would be a good thing to do.’ But no, we perceive it would not be a good thing to do if it's against the blueprint in the Scripture, if it’s against the word of God in some way. That's the principle that Nehemiah is following.
