But here is the triumph of steadfastness. ‘So the wall was finished in the twenty and fifth day of the month Elon, in fifty and two days.’ There was so much rubble; there was so much rubbish. Everyone despaired. There were so many breaches in the walls. The Babylonians, years and years before, had demolished everything. But the dust was there, and the rubble was there, and the broken stones with there, and they worked so hard and there were so many of them at it, that despite all the problems it was complete in fifty-two days. It is astonishing. Nobody’s claiming a miracle, but the power of God was so with them so that though they had to put in place every brick themselves, they did it. Human hands did it by the power of God.
