Nehemiah 6:16

The completion of the task, despite all of the tactics they could think of to slow progress, made their enemies feel small. They weren't the superior people, after all. They realised that the people of Jerusalem and the regions around had accomplished far more than they could ever have done. Samaria didn't have a wall, and Jerusalem did have. None of the other regions had a wall, but Jerusalem was now capable of being defended, and they were cast down in their own eyes. What a glorious expression! ‘For they perceived that this work was wrought of our God’, not by the direct hand of God, but in this case by the indirect hand of God strengthening the labourers and the workers. So they realised that God had enabled the Jews. They were fighting not only against flesh and blood, but against the Lord, and they had the overwhelming impression that they could not succeed. They had tried so many different ways to intimidate, frighten, distract, ensnare the workers, and all had come to nothing. God had silently been doing something that had reduced all their efforts to nothing.
Application
What a wonderful thing when sometimes that happens, even in our time, and Christian work surges forward in some way and people are converted and transformed, and some of them are people who were in all kinds of trouble, and even the worldling is obliged to say, ‘There is nothing else could have accomplished this, but a work of God.’ They may not say it outwardly, but they have to say it inwardly, sometimes. When God is with us in answer to prayer, the things that are accomplished spiritually in people's lives have to be acknowledged even by the unbeliever. It's a witness to them.
