Nehemiah 8:8

What a tremendous description. The Hebrew word there comes from the Hebrew verb ‘to separate’. They read in the law of God, separating. Separating what? Separating the words maybe. It was a vast gathering. They raised their voices and they made sure there was a little gap between each word, so that everything could be understood and heard by the people. They spoke very carefully, enunciated clearly, or it means they separated between the text and their explanations. But they spoke distinctly, separating things so that everything was clear, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading. The task of leading worship.
Application
Understanding and clarity is everything. Not theatrical effect, not impact of screaming, roaring sound, but clarity and reverence and care, because it's the understanding which must receive and function. Right back in this book about recovery from decline you read these rules. They are priorities for the church.
