Do we remember back to the first time the word of God really meant something to us, and it guided us, and its moral demands upon us became clear? It moved us and it became our light, our pillar of cloud by day, and our pillar of fire, our divine revelation, and we wanted to search it daily. God worked a miracle in us and we saw and understood things we had never seen before, and they moved our hearts.
The holiness of God was revealed to us, and his law became the rule for our lives. We became convinced that to live by these standards was what we wanted more than anything else, because they are right and true and profitable to our souls. They protect us from so many false and destructive paths, and by obedience to them we grow is wisdom and knowledge. Israel was blessed above all the surrounding nations because they had the statutes of the Lord to live by, statutes that taught them justice, and kindness, and right ways of behaving towards their fellow Israelites. God’s law was impressed upon your heart and you began to feel day by day your sin and your departures and your failings, and how it saddened you and you repented before him. That was a miraculous work within us.
The sabbath that stands for dedication to God. Of course, the sabbath as the Lord's Day, is with us now, and it is still the great lesson in commitment and dedication to God. There is a day when, as the law of the land permits, we dedicate ourselves to him and we leave worldly things entirely to one side.
