The implication of confessing the sins of the nation and of their fathers is that they are telling the Lord that they will not live any longer this way. If they do, they know that they will receive no answer to their prayer.
The prayer has been quite extensive already, and only now have we come to anything about themselves. ‘We are in great distress.’ With us today, that is where we start. That is where we begin to pray: with our need and distress, but this biblical pattern prayer has done a great deal before they get to themselves. So that helps to us to shape our own prayers.
