No, the fact is that the human race is in the hand of God, and like putty in his hand, and he will bring us down from all that isolation and arrogance that we protect ourselves with. Events will come at us out of the blue which take us by surprise, and turn out to be the very thing we feared most, and which touch us at our weakest point, and strike our vulnerabilities which we tried not to admit to ourselves were always there. Self-belief can be erected on a very flimsy structure of lies, and it takes little to cause total collapse. Do we really want to live like this? The young man tells himself that no one as physical abilities like him, and trust in his legs (Psalm 147:10). The young lady tells herself that no one can match her beauty. In both cases the aging process starts to eat away at our gifts and we look again and in a short time there has been a change we scarcely recognize. But far more dangerous are the self-deceits we tell ourselves with regard to our conduct, and our imagined ability to please God and to qualify for his eternal reward, or our ability to escape his judgment and live totally without him.
