The thoroughness of God’s investigation of men and women will take all by surprise. What have you hidden away that you think is beyond the reach of God? Perhaps you imagine that your secret schemes are known to nobody else. You think great things for yourself, and you believe nobody is aware of your ambitions, and therefore no one can do anything to thwart you and prevent you achieving your objectives. But God knows exactly what you have in mind. Maybe you plan to get there by unscrupulous means, walking on the backs of colleagues, dealing in half-truths to reach your goal. You assume that because no immediate obstacle arises to stop you, that God is unaware of what you are doing, and will not notice. Or maybe you plan evil against another, and you tell your plans to no one. How can any be aware of what you are up to? You will subtly brief against a rival to incite ill-feeling against them, and then stand back and watch the effects, or you will do something even more overt to harm them. The wicked need to remember that God gives them a licence, and the delay in the implementation of justice is not due to weakness or ignorance of what they have done, but is because he has a timetable which he is working to. Men count on storing up treasures on earth, but it is foolishness, for they can take nothing with them, and really they know that. They have adjusted their horizons to not extend beyond this short life, and tried to convince themselves that that is enough.
