Here is the temptation that comes to you, perfectly described here. ‘Look, do not worry about judgment and thinking and seeing into things, we do not have to be like that as long as we stick together. Nobody will catch us. We will never be caught out. Nothing will go wrong. Look at us. There are a whole lot of us. We do not think, we are not too serious-minded, we just take life as it comes. And while there are enough of us hanging together like that, we will be alright.’ That is the temptation which is being expressed here. ‘Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse.’ The gang of robbers, the gang of bandits gets a kind of security by being totally in together and the feeling that they will never be caught by the forces of law and order. ‘Merge your interests with ours; cast in your lot among us.’ This is the first picture that is here, that the alternative to knowledge and wisdom is really totally insensitive and injurious.
