Verses 15-19 elaborate this, people who are like this just set a trap for themselves. Your whole life, say verses 15-19, consists of a bewildering array of forces and events. Now, can't you see what happens to you if you are not wise, if you have no insight and depth, if you are not a thinker? These forces and events eventually just surround you until your life is utter chaos and confusion. That is what happens. And you are caught as if in a trap and it is too late to do anything about it. ‘Walk not’, do not even stroll along the road and discuss it; don’t experiment with it. Don’t say, I will try it for a while and turn back to God later. You will soon be trapped, stuck. The world has not thought about it. It just rushes to do it. ‘Their feet run …’; they have not even stopped to think about it. They rush with mindless prejudice to do evil. So, this first chapter is exhorting and warning that every child of God is to grow and deepen. As we go on to chapter 2 the exhortations become tremendously strong. Every child of God needs to have a strong practical intelligence, wise dealing, insight and so on. And we come to these great chapters of wisdom and it is spelled then just what this will do for us. How we will develop, how we will deepen.
