Proverbs 1:26 Commentary and Bible Study

This is not the laughter of enjoyment as if God takes pleasure in our perishing in sin. He says the opposite: ‘As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?’ (Ezekiel 33:11). There is great pity in the heart of God, but it is mixed with a strong reproof towards those who think they can succeed in rejecting God and get away with their sin. God invites us with open arms at the moment, but the time is coming when the door will be closed and he will restrain all further mercy towards us. He will have given us enough opportunity to repent. He will treat you as you have treated him. This is jolting language. He will take no notice of it when the bottom falls out of your life, having sincerely offered you salvation for so long. God takes very seriously our treating him with indifference. When people get a summons from the courts and do not respond, it becomes more serious.
