Proverbs 1:28

Too late will the souls of the lost become anything like serious. Then they will summon up all the earnestness they are capable of, but to no effect. They will do what they know they should have done long before, but in their minds there was always a reason why they should put it off. They should have risen early, making this the highest priority in their lives, but it failed to grip their hearts until they had exhausted God’s patience with them.
Application
Have we ever tried to appeal to someone’s mercy and clemency, and tried to awaken their sympathy for our case? Do we really know how to do this? If we saw that our deliverance lay entirely in the decision of a powerful and influential person, there would be no appeal that we would not be prepared to make to that person. But God invites us to come to him for deliverance not from some temporary hardship in this life, but from the eternal loss of the soul. These things are stated to bring us to our sense and to encourage us to look ahead. But so hard is the human heart that unless God awakens us we continue to ignore him.
