Proverbs 1:29

God will not be convinced of the sincerity of appeals that are offered too late. He knows that there is not really a change of heart. Like those who make extravagant promises in order to escape the death sentence, they cry out to God now, not because they have learnt to hate their sin and long to be made righteous, but because they can see the consequence of what they have done and that it cannot be put off any longer. They hated knowledge and they did so consistently in their lives. They rejected the testimony of any Christians God sent to speak to them; they hardened their heart against conscience; they set no value on the knowledge of God, but preferred to fill their lives with trivial things which satisfied them at a carnal level. They ignored all warnings of the danger of this. But now they seem to be serious. However, this is the product of fear and not of love to God. They are not really seeking the Lord. But it says they are. Yes, but only to get relief, restoration, to return to their earthly happiness. When it suited them, they rejected God repeatedly. Who can believe they are sincere now they approach him when they are in trouble?
Application
Some people who have no time for salvation do begin to pray when they are in trouble. Yes, but these prayers are not acceptable to the Lord if they are only prayed for deliverance from the immediate danger. We must realise that we do not even know how to pray properly and that we need help from God even for this. We must therefore come to God and ask him to help us pray, to help us be sincere with him, and to remove all wrong motives from our hearts. We must ask him to help us seek him.
